Even if they seem idle, computers may send and receive large amounts of information while connected to the Internet, without your knowledge. In many cases, a malicious program may be responsible for part of your overall Internet traffic, which is not a good thing. Additionally, someone on your network may attempt to connect to the Internet without your permission. If you wish to know which programs or users are connecting to the Internet, IP Traffic Monitor can help you. It provides you with detailed statistics about your Internet traffic, which are broken down by the applications and processes that send and receive data. You can filter the data, view a history, generate reports and much more.

IP Traffic Monitor works on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. It requires the WinPcap 4.1.3 library. If you don't have it, the setup wizard will offer to install it for you. It does not take more than a minute to complete the entire installation process and you don't have to sacrifice too many resources.

Processes which download and upload data are displayed in a large tree structure, on the software's user interface. You can find a large amount of information for each process, including remote IPs and hosts, the amount of downloaded and uploaded data and more. The information is displayed in real time and you can group it by processes, destinations or connections, by clicking a series of buttons, located on the left side of the interface. Moreover, the amounts of downloaded and uploaded data are displayed for each process, destination and connection in pie charts, in the lower region of the main window.

Besides real time statistics, the software provides you with a traffic history as well. You can view how much data is uploaded and downloaded every hour, day, week, month or year. The information is also displayed in a chart, in the same section of the interface.

The software comes with a real time traffic sniffer as well. It automatically intercepts sent and received packets on your network and it decodes their raw data. You can set the sniffer to capture all applications and remote IPs or specific elements.

Pros

You can view which applications and services connect to the Internet. The application displays the remote ports and hosts for each connection. You an also view a traffic history and use a network sniffer.

Cons

While using the trial version, a nag screen will show up each time you switch between the interface's sections and you won't be able to set up filters. IP Traffic Monitor provides you with all the information you need about your Internet traffic and it makes it easy to understand.
